Are You Ready for a Cyber Insurance Audit?

Are You Ready for a Cyber Insurance Audit?

A few years ago, renewing your cyber insurance policy was a simple task. You filled out a one-page form, checked a box stating you had an antivirus program installed, and mailed it back.

Those days are officially over.

Insurance providers spent the last few years paying out millions of dollars in ransomware claims. Unsurprisingly, they hated doing that. As a result, carriers have drastically tightened their standards, turning a once-painless questionnaire into an invasive interrogation. They no longer care what you plan to do—they want concrete proof of what you are doing right now.

What Insurance Underwriters Actually Require

When your renewal form arrives, the underwriter is looking for specific, non-negotiable security controls. If you leave these blank, your rates will skyrocket, or your coverage will be outright denied.

Here are the key controls every carrier looks for today:

  • Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) - Asking for a simple password is no longer enough. Underwriters now require MFA on every single email account, remote desktop connection, VPN, and administrative panel.
  • Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) - Traditional antivirus software only looks for known viruses. EDR actively monitors your computers for suspicious behavior and isolates threats before they can spread across your network.
  • Immutable backups - Regular backups are good, but if a hacker can access and delete your backups during an attack, they are useless. Immutable backups are locked down so nobody—not even an intruder with admin rights—can alter or erase them.
  • Security awareness training - Most cyberattacks start with a human error, usually someone clicking a bad link in a sketchy email. Carriers want proof that your team undergoes regular training to spot phishing scams.

The Danger of Guessing on Your Questionnaire

When faced with a mountain of technical jargon, it can be tempting to just guess "yes" and hope for the best.

Do NOT do this.

Guessing on an insurance application gives the carrier a legal loophole to deny your claim after a breach happens. If an attacker gets into your system and the insurance adjuster discovers you did not actually have MFA enabled on all email accounts as claimed, they will happily leave you with the bill.

How We Make Your Renewal Effortless

Filling out these compliance forms does not need to ruin your week. Technology is meant to serve your business, not turn you into a part-time compliance officer.

When you work with 415 IT, we take care of the heavy lifting. We implement the exact controls your carrier requires, maintain the proper documentation year-round, and help you complete the application with total accuracy.

Instead of stressing over complex security requirements, you can stay focused on running your business while we ensure your network and your insurance policy remain completely covered.

If you have a cyber insurance questionnaire sitting on your desk, do not guess your way through it. Give 415 IT a call at (415) 295-4898 today.
