Don’t Listen to These Tech Myths

Don’t Listen to These Tech Myths

Reliable IT advice is hard to come by, especially for cybersecurity. Whether it's uninformed coworkers or fake online influencers with their guides and platforms, most advice you find these days is bound to be outdated, incorrect, or both. You don’t want to base your business’ security around security myths, so we’re here to bust them today and offer you some guidance you can trust.

“My Business is Too Small.”

Smaller businesses might have a smaller presence, but that doesn’t mean they’re any less susceptible to attacks. Attackers choose their targets based on odds of success, and if it’s between your SMB and a large enterprise with more resources, congratulations, you’re the unlucky winner. Thanks to automated software, millions of businesses are scanned for specific vulnerabilities, and hackers can find low-hanging fruit to target that is guaranteed to yield results rather than try their chances with attacks that are doomed to fail.

“Incognito Mode Will Save Me.”

Computers are interconnected devices, meaning that not only will your computer save session info for later, but so too will your ISP, employer, and every website you visit.  Incognito mode, or private browsing, can prevent your current device from saving browser history, searches, and cookies, this is true… but this only applies to your device. Your ISP, employer, and the websites you visit can still see what you’re up to.

“My Mac Can’t Get Viruses.”

Generally speaking, Windows devices have held a significantly larger portion of the market share compared to Apple’s Mac devices. Economically speaking, hackers have more to gain by targeting Windows devices. This used to mean that Mac had fewer viruses targeting them, but this fact has changed, as Apple’s share of the market has increased over the years, bringing more threats along with it.

“My Servers Are Safer Than the Cloud.”

As much as you want to believe this is true, a modern data center will be far better equipped to protect your data than any in-house server. You might have a locked door and an alarm system, but a data center has security and redundancies for fires, floods, power outages, and other disasters, as well as other security contingencies such as armed guards and biometric authentication. You get much more security with the cloud and a similar level of access.
