Tip of the Week: Some Google Search Tips to Help You

For many tech-savvy individuals, the expression “Google it” is a well-tested, and approved, method to researching. Are you getting the most out of Google search? Today, we share useful tips on how to better optimize your Google search queries.

Quotation Marks

If what you are searching for is a phrase, your conjunction of words might bring up a lot of results, but with little relativity to what you are trying to find. This is a scenario which can easily be avoided by using quotation marks. Simply wrap your search query with quotation marks and Google will direct you to known quotes or passages.

Example: “Have you ever danced with the devil in the pale moonlight?”

Asterisks

Another useful tip when searching on Google is using an asterisk in place of a word you are unsure of. This also works with lyrics, quotes, or phrases. If you aren’t certain, replace any given word with an asterisk and your results will recognize that a word should be in that asterisk’s place.

Example: “Do you want to * a snowman?”

Minus Sign

Many words in the English language are ambiguous. While this is fascinating, it’s very difficult finding results on Google Search sometimes due to the ambiguity. Let’s say, for example you decided it’s time for a new vacuum. You decide to do research on a Shark, and are mesmerized at the fact that they do not sleep. But where are the vacuums? This is the ideal scenario for using this to narrow down the search results.

Example: Shark -fish

Search Websites with Keywords

Google Search not only has the ability to search for certain websites, but for content on individual sites. This is a handy tool when searching for information about a specific topic from a specific resource.

Example: Halloween:nytimes.com

Flip a Virtual Coin

While most of these tips could change the way you query on Google, we do have an Easter egg to share that can be brought out only in dire need. Google offers a random coin generator, and by saying “flip a coin” or typing it in the search bar, you will be able to once and for all close debates or determine a vote. Give it a try!
